Slalom Canoe is an action-packed racing game released on August 9, 2012, as part of Google’s interactive Doodle series for the London Summer Olympics. It’s widely considered the most challenging of the four Olympic Doodles that year — you’re paddling a kayak down a rushing river, weaving through gates while dodging rocks and other obstacles, all against the clock. Many players found it harder to master than Hurdles, Basketball, or Soccer.
The real Olympic slalom canoe events had wrapped up the week before this Doodle launched, with France taking two golds and Great Britain winning gold and silver in the men’s canoe double. The actual sport involves timed runs down a 300-500 metre course where competitors must pass through numbered gates while navigating whitewater rapids. Canoeing first appeared as an Olympic sport back in the 1936 Berlin Games, so it has a rich history that Google honoured with this frantic little browser game.
What makes this Doodle stand out from the others is how dynamic it is. Unlike the Hurdles game where the course is always the same, the Slalom Canoe course changes every time you play — obstacles and gate positions shift around, so you can’t just memorise a pattern. You need to react in real time. The river has around 10 gates marked by green poles that you must pass through. Missing even one gate means you won’t get the coveted three-star rating, no matter how fast your time is. And if you hit the riverbanks, rocks, or animals along the way, your canoe slows down and takes damage.
The controls are simple but demand coordination. Alternate between left and right to paddle faster — the quicker you hammer those keys, the faster your boat moves. But speed alone won’t win it. You also need to steer carefully through each gate while avoiding obstacles scattered throughout the course. Some players reported times around 22 seconds, though hitting all the gates for that perfect three-star run remains the real challenge.
How To Play Slalom Canoe
Use the left and right arrow keys to paddle. Alternating quickly between them makes your canoe move faster down the river.
You can also use the mouse — click on the left or right side of the boat to paddle that direction.
Steer your canoe through all the green gates. Missing gates won’t end your run, but you’ll lose your chance at three stars.
Avoid hitting rocks, riverbanks, and obstacles. Collisions slow you down and damage your canoe.
Your goal is to finish in the fastest time possible while passing through every gate for the best score.
