Google Basketball Doodle – 24-Second Olympic Hoops Challenge

Google Basketball is an addictive little sports game released on August 8, 2012, as part of Google’s interactive Doodle series celebrating the London Summer Olympics. It’s deceptively simple — you’ve got 24 seconds to sink as many baskets as possible — but mastering the timing takes real practice. This was one of four playable Olympic Doodles that year, alongside Hurdles, Slalom Canoe, and Soccer, and together they racked up over one billion plays during that four-day run.

The 2012 Olympics Doodles were inspired by classic button-mashing sports games from the 80s and 90s. Google developer Marcin Wichary even wired up these games with the then-new Gamepad API, so players could use actual controllers if they wanted. The basketball game features a female player shooting hoops in what looks like an elementary school gymnasium — a personal touch from the Doodle artist, who based the setting on the gym where they performed at talent shows with their siblings growing up.

The gameplay is all about timing and power control. You press and hold the spacebar (or mouse button) to charge your shot, then release to throw the ball. Hold too short and the ball falls short of the hoop. Hold too long and it sails right over the backboard. The sweet spot is releasing when the basketball changes from orange to a deeper shade — but before it turns red. Here’s the tricky part: as you make consecutive shots, your player moves back from the basket. You’ll start close for easy 1-point shots, then shift to the 2-point line, and eventually reach the 3-point line where the timing window gets much tighter.

The theoretical maximum score is around 48 points in the 24-second window (roughly 2 points per second if you’re absolutely perfect). When time runs out, you can share your score on Google+ or challenge yourself again. It’s the kind of game where you tell yourself “just one more try” about fifteen times in a row.

How To Play Google Basketball

Press the spacebar or click and hold the mouse button to pick up the ball and start charging your shot.

Release when the ball turns deep orange but before it goes red. This gives you the right amount of power to reach the hoop.

Make consecutive baskets to move further back on the court. The 2-point and 3-point lines require holding the button slightly longer.

Try to find a rhythm. The timing stays consistent at each distance, so once you nail the feel for each position, you can chain shots quickly.

Your goal is to score as many points as possible before the 24-second timer runs out.
