The Valentine’s Day 2022 Google Doodle is one of Google’s most charming interactive creations — an isometric 3D puzzle game where two smitten hamsters stand on opposite sides of a broken path, and it’s your job to piece the route together so they can finally reach each other. Released on February 14, 2022, it turned Google’s homepage into a miniature love story told entirely through clever spatial puzzles and adorable animations.
The concept is deceptively simple: each level presents you with a gap-filled path between two hamsters. You need to slide, rotate, and place path tiles into the correct positions to create an unbroken route connecting the pair. As you progress through the levels, the puzzles become more complex — paths twist in multiple directions, platforms sit at different heights, and you’ll need to think in three dimensions to figure out how pieces fit together. It’s part jigsaw, part spatial reasoning, and entirely heartwarming.
Google’s Doodle team described it as an “interactive 3-D Doodle” — a step up from many of their previous holiday games in terms of visual complexity. The isometric perspective gives the game a toy-like quality, as if you’re rearranging pieces on a tiny diorama. When you successfully connect a path, the hamsters scamper toward each other with an enthusiasm that makes the puzzle-solving feel genuinely rewarding. Each completed level ends with the two hamsters meeting in the middle, nuzzling or celebrating in some adorable way before the next challenge begins.
The art direction was led by Kevin Laughlin and Celine You, who gave the hamsters expressive faces and bouncy animations that bring real personality to what could have been a sterile puzzle game. The engineering team — including Daniel Dovali, Conner Lane, and Mark Ivey — built the 3D engine that runs smoothly in a browser without any plugins or downloads. UX designer Winnie Ma ensured the controls felt intuitive whether you were playing on desktop or mobile.
Valentine’s Day Doodles have a long history at Google. In 2017, they released the beloved Pangolin Love game, where you helped an endangered pangolin collect ingredients for chocolate-covered strawberries across four days of mini-games. The 2022 edition takes a different approach — instead of an action game, it’s a contemplative puzzle that rewards patience and careful observation. The hamster theme was a deliberate choice: hamsters are universally seen as cute, non-threatening, and endlessly entertaining to watch, making them perfect Valentine’s ambassadors.
