Only Up is a viral 3D platformer where the only direction is up. Released in 2023 by developer JEGG, the game became an internet sensation when streamers and content creators discovered that its punishing “no checkpoints” design created some of the most dramatic and heartbreaking moments in gaming. One wrong jump can send you plummeting from the clouds all the way back to the ground, losing hours of progress in seconds.

You play as Jackie, a young boy from a run-down neighbourhood who begins climbing through an increasingly surreal vertical world. Starting at street level, you parkour your way upward through construction scaffolding, rooftops, floating cars, giant household objects, train tracks suspended in mid-air, and eventually into the clouds and beyond. The world is a fever dream of mismatched objects — a refrigerator balanced on a crane, a sofa floating next to a satellite dish, piano keys forming a staircase. Nothing makes logical sense, but every object is a potential platform.

The game’s core tension comes from having zero safety nets. There are no checkpoints, no save points, and no second chances. If you fall, you fall — and gravity is merciless. A slip from near the top of the world can send you crashing through multiple layers of platforms back to the very beginning. This design choice is what made the game go viral. Streamers screaming after a two-hour climb ends with a single missed jump became some of the most-watched gaming clips of 2023.

Despite (or perhaps because of) its frustration factor, Only Up taps into a primal satisfaction. Every metre of height you gain feels earned. Every new section of the surreal skyscape feels like a genuine discovery. The game doesn’t hold your hand, doesn’t explain its world, and doesn’t apologise for its difficulty. It simply points up and says “good luck.” The journey from the bottom to the top takes skilled players about 90 minutes, but most first attempts stretch to many hours of climbing, falling, and climbing again.

How To Play Only Up

  • Use WASD to move Jackie and the mouse to control the camera.
  • Press Spacebar to jump. Time your jumps carefully — there are no checkpoints.
  • Look for climbable objects and platforms that lead upward. Everything is a potential path.
  • Be patient on tricky sections. Rushing leads to falls, and falls are devastating.
  • Look for routes that offer multiple landing spots in case you miss a jump.
  • If you fall, stay calm. You know the route now — climb back faster than before.
